Supporting Washroom Air Quality in High-Footfall Airport Environments

Heathrow Airport is one of the world’s busiest international travel hubs, welcoming millions of passengers annually and connecting destinations across the globe. Terminal 3 serves a high volume of international travellers every day, creating a fast-paced environment with continuous operational demands across passenger facilities.

Maintaining comfortable and well-managed washroom environments within high-footfall public spaces is an ongoing challenge for facilities management teams. Heathrow Terminal 3 sought a solution capable of supporting washroom environmental quality and odour management while operating efficiently within a demanding commercial environment.

This case study highlights how Biozone Scientific worked with Heathrow Terminal 3 to implement a commercial odour management solution using Air Care technology.

The Washroom Odour Challenge at Heathrow Terminal 3

Managing High Visitor Volumes

Despite maintaining a rigorous and continuous cleaning regime, Terminal 3’s washroom facilities experienced persistent odour challenges due to exceptionally high daily visitor volumes.

With up to 35,000 people using the washroom facilities daily, maintaining a consistently pleasant washroom environment presented a significant operational challenge for the airport’s facilities management teams.

Traditional fragrance-based systems alone were unable to provide a long-term solution capable of supporting environmental quality across such heavily used public spaces.

Limitations of Traditional Fragrance Systems

While fragrance systems can temporarily mask odours, high-traffic commercial washrooms often require more comprehensive environmental management approaches capable of operating continuously throughout the day.

Heathrow Airport therefore sought a more sustainable and operationally effective solution that could support washroom air quality without adding unnecessary maintenance complexity or chemical consumables.

Air Care Solution

Supporting Washroom Environmental Quality

Following consultations and site assessments with Biozone Scientific representatives, Heathrow Terminal 3 selected Air Care units for a live operational trial within ten washroom facilities.

Air Care was chosen due to its suitability for transient commercial environments including:

  • Washrooms
  • Corridors
  • Reception areas
  • Shared public spaces
  • Commercial facilities environments

The solution was designed to support ongoing odour management and indoor environmental quality within continuously occupied public spaces.

Air Care For Transient Commercial Spaces

Air Care utilises Biozone Scientific’s Photoplasma technology to support odour management within commercial environments.

The system operates continuously and is designed to support:

  • Washroom environmental quality
  • Passenger comfort
  • Indoor air quality management
  • Low-maintenance operation

The technology also operates without consumable fragrances, chemical treatments or filter replacement requirements.

Low-Maintenance Continuous Operation

The Air Care solution was particularly suitable for Heathrow’s operational environment due to:

  • Continuous automated operation
  • Minimal maintenance requirements
  • Annual lamp replacement schedule
  • Reduced reliance on consumable products

This supported easier long-term facilities management within a demanding passenger environment.

Results & Analysis

Working closely with the client, Biozone Scientific installed Air Care units in ten selected washrooms at Terminal 3, initiating a 30-day trial period. After a suitable period of operation, inspections were conducted on the washroom facilities. The outcome was remarkable – the AIRCARE units had effectively eradicated the persistent odour problems and replaced them with a fresh, pleasant washroom atmosphere.

The success of the Air Care units brought about numerous benefits:

  • Odour Neutralisation: The units completely removed odours, significantly improving the washroom environment.
  • Enhanced Ambience: Visitors now experience a more pleasant and inviting atmosphere.
  • Healthier Environment: The Air Care units created a healthier space for both the cleaning staff and the public.
  • Cost-Effective: Air Care units proved to be a cost-effective and efficient solution.
